An Arizona couple lost $20,000 after a Chase Bank employee accidentally unfroze funds that were initially frozen to stop a scammer. The ordeal began in March when the couple received a suspicious text asking to confirm a $399 Zelle payment to "Susan Smith." After replying "No," they were directed to call a number where someone impersonating a bank employee claimed their account was flagged for fraud and hinted at an "inside job."
Following these directions, the couple withdrew $20,000 from Chase Bank and deposited it into a new account via Apple Wallet. Unfortunately, the scammer stole this money, although Chase initially froze the funds later that day. However, a bank employee then accidentally unfroze the account, enabling the con artist to abscond with the cash. Chase has reached out to the couple and assures them the case remains active.
Meanwhile, Peoria police have reportedly identified a suspect located in Florida. This case echoes a similar scam in Arizona last month when a man lost $27,000 after a scammer posing as his bank representative drained his life savings. These incidents highlight the growing sophistication of fraudsters targeting bank customers and the critical need for vigilance.
