Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao has issued a stark warning about the growing threat of AI-enabled deepfake hacking, emphasizing that video call verifications may soon become unreliable. He cautioned users against installing software from unofficial links to avoid compromising their security.

Japanese crypto influencer Mai Fujimoto experienced a direct attack after interacting with a deepfake during a Zoom call. She was deceived into clicking an update link after encountering audio problems, which led to her Telegram and Metamask accounts being hacked. The attacker exploited compromised Telegram credentials of someone she knew, making the ruse even more convincing.

In a similar case, North Korean-linked group BlueNoroff used AI-generated deepfake videos over prolonged Zoom calls to deceive an employee at a cryptocurrency foundation. The victim, struggling with microphone issues, was tricked into downloading malicious software that installed a keylogger, screen recorder, and information stealer designed to exfiltrate crypto assets.

These incidents highlight an emerging trend where deepfake-based cyberattacks increasingly target cryptocurrency professionals and remote workers. By exploiting vulnerabilities in audio and video communication, attackers deploy sophisticated malware aimed at stealing valuable digital assets. Zhao’s warning underscores the urgent need for vigilance and improved security measures in the crypto sector.
