The Ethereum Foundation has unveiled a comprehensive treasury management strategy designed to balance capital allocation, risk management, and privacy commitments as Ethereum’s global and institutional presence expands. This new framework introduces an asset-liability model linking operational spending to a fixed percentage of the treasury, currently set at 15%, with a 2.5-year reserve runway, ensuring sustainable financial stewardship amid increasing market complexities. The strategy implements a counter-cyclical treasury approach, allowing the Foundation to deploy capital more aggressively during market downturns and moderate activity during bull cycles. It broadens treasury exposure beyond ETH to include vetted DeFi protocols, staking, lending, and tokenized real-world assets, while maintaining a strong emphasis on privacy as a core principle. Privacy standards are tightly integrated into the strategy, with the Foundation adopting a rubric called “Defipunk” to assess DeFi partners on criteria such as permissionless access, self-custody, open-source licensing, and advanced privacy features like transaction shielding. This move reflects Ethereum’s ideological commitment to self-sovereignty and neutrality, pushing for ethical standards in decentralized finance despite potential conflicts with increasing regulatory scrutiny. Internal operations will mirror these values by employing privacy-preserving tools and prioritizing open-source contributions, ensuring that the Foundation’s activities align with its stated principles. Overall, the new treasury framework signals a shift toward more active and principled management of Ethereum’s vast resources in a rapidly evolving regulatory and technological environment.
