Sina Gholinejad, a 37-year-old Iranian national, has pleaded guilty to masterminding the Robbinhood ransomware attacks that targeted multiple U.S. cities, causing significant disruption and tens of millions of dollars in financial losses. In January 2019, Gholinejad and his co-conspirators gained illegal access to victims' computers, deploying Robbinhood malware to encrypt files and demand cryptocurrency ransoms. They used advanced techniques like crypto mixing and chain-hopping to launder stolen funds and conceal their identities. The ransomware attacks severely impacted cities including Baltimore, Greenville, Yonkers, and Gresham. The Baltimore attack alone forced the city to take hundreds of computers offline and disrupted basic services for months.Matthew R. Galeotti, Head of the DOJ Criminal Division, emphasized the department’s resolve to bring cybercriminals targeting cities, healthcare systems, and businesses to justice without impunity.Gholinejad faces sentencing in August, with a potential prison term of up to 30 years for his role in these destructive ransomware attacks.
