Richmond, Virginia, has launched the fourth cohort of its Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) program, providing $500 monthly for 24 months to single parents and primary caregivers to enhance financial stability.

The Richmond Resilience Initiative (RRI) will distribute a total of $12,000 in financial assistance to qualified residents starting May 27th. This cohort focuses on single parents, including guardians, step-parents, foster parents, and other primary household caregivers.

The program aims to improve financial stability among working families with no restrictions on how the funds can be used. Previous participants utilized the monthly payments for essential needs, debt repayment, educational investments, and family stability.

Richmond’s Office of Community Wealth Building (OCWB) reports that direct, unrestricted cash assistance helps families achieve greater financial independence and reduce stress.

Richmond Mayor Danny Avula highlighted that the initiative reflects the city’s commitment to providing stability and support for families, emphasizing trust and dignity as key components of the program.

Applications for the fourth cohort are open until June 30th.
