Santander UK disclosed that scammers siphoned £1.99 million ($2.04 million) from customers' accounts between Christmas and January 1st of 2024. The bank highlighted these figures to urge customers to remain vigilant during the holiday season.

According to Santander, one individual suffered a loss exceeding £600,000 after being ensnared by a counterfeit investment scheme. Additional customers were deceived into transferring money to fraudsters posing as "recruiters," resulting in average losses of approximately £1,700 per person. On average, each victim incurred losses of about £3,354, prompting the bank to caution all customers to remain vigilant.

Furthermore, customers reported falling victim to scams when purchasing items online, such as clothes bought on Instagram, as well as football and Taylor Swift tickets acquired on Facebook Marketplace. On Boxing Day, numerous customers filed claims after being contacted by scammers posing as their bank.

Santander recommends that individuals pause and verify recipients before transferring money, meticulously research social media deals that appear too good to be true, and confirm suspicious calls or messages by hanging up and contacting a familiar number.
