The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and the Bank of England are collaborating on a project to track stablecoin reserves in real-time. UK financial regulators are focusing on oversight of stablecoins and have introduced Pyxtrial, a tool to verify on-chain liabilities for tokenized products backed by Real-World Assets (RWA). SEC Chair Gary Gensler has expressed concerns about stablecoins, proposing registration and increased regulatory oversight, and the US SEC targeted Binance US stablecoin (BUSD) over securities claims in 2023. However, the charges were recently dropped, strengthening the stablecoin sector in the US. Pyxtrial is a first step towards a tool to proactively detect issues in stablecoin backing and enable the monitoring of asset-backed stablecoins’ balance sheets. The UK watchdog has expressed concern over the validity of the reserves that stablecoin issuers claim to back their holdings. Stablecoins have a market capitalization of $164.02 billion, but concerns arise as they remain largely unregulated. SEC Chair Gary Gensler has proposed registration and additional regulatory oversight for stablecoins, stating that he believes some qualify as securities.
