The Securities and Exchange Commission's Salt Lake City office, infamous for its failed fraud lawsuit against DEBT Box in the crypto world, will shut down due to "significant attrition" among its staff, some of whom were pushed out over the case. Lawyers Michael Welsh and Joseph Watkins resigned after a federal judge sanctioned them for seeking to freeze DEBT Box's assets on misleading grounds.

The judge dismissed the case and ordered the SEC to pay DEBT Box $1.8 million in legal fees. The SEC stated that it considered budget and organizational efficiency in deciding to close the office and has no plans to close any other regional offices. The regulator's Denver office will take over enforcement jurisdiction as the Salt Lake City office closes.
