The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into Amazon's (NASDAQ:AMZN) self-driving unit Zoox (ZOOX) due to instances of unexpected sudden braking. The NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) received reports of two incidents involving Zoox vehicles equipped with the Zoox Automated Driving System (ADS) where the vehicles unexpectedly braked, leading to rear-end collisions. Both incidents involved a Toyota Highlander with Zoox ADS, resulting in minor injuries to the motorcyclists following the Zoox vehicles. ODI has commenced a preliminary evaluation of 500 such robotaxis to scrutinize the Zoox ADS installed on these vehicles. Initial findings confirm that the Zoox vehicles were operating with the ADS engaged prior to each collision.
