Researchers at OpenAI have raised concerns about a powerful AI discovery that they believe could pose a threat to humanity. These warnings were reportedly one of the factors contributing to CEO Sam Altman's dismissal.

OpenAI's technology chief, Mira Murati, sent an internal message to employees detailing a project known as Q* and a letter to the board prior to Altman's ouster. While the accuracy of media stories related to this project was not confirmed, the message did not deny their existence.

Sources have indicated that the new Q* AI model has the potential to solve certain mathematical problems, although it is still at a rudimentary level of development, comparable to that of grade-school students. This development is significant as it suggests that the AI model may possess advanced reasoning capabilities.

OpenAI researchers also highlighted the skills of the AI model and the potential dangers associated with it, though a copy of the letter has not been reviewed by Reuters. Additionally, the researchers revealed that an AI scientist team was working on optimizing existing AI models for scientific applications.

Following his dismissal from OpenAI, Altman was hired by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, but he was subsequently rehired by OpenAI after over 700 employees supporting him threatened to resign.
